Practise medicine in Belgium: visa and recognition

In Belgium, the professional visa issued by FPS Public Health is required to practise a healthcare profession. For foreign qualifications, the route depends on where the degree was issued and whether the intended activity is temporary or permanent. Approval as a specialist or general practitioner is a separate matter.

Steps to check

  1. 01

Identify where the degree was issued

For an EEA or Swiss qualification and permanent establishment, seek recognition from the competent Community. Degrees from outside the EEA and Switzerland follow a different equivalence route.

  2. 02

    Apply for the professional visa

Follow the FPS Public Health procedure matching your qualification and form of practice. A visa is required to practise as a doctor.

  3. 03

    Check specialist approval

Approval as a GP or specialist is distinct from the visa. A specific recognition is needed for general practice within the compulsory health insurance reimbursement system.

  4. 04

    Prepare language and professional-standing evidence

Relevant routes require evidence of language knowledge and good professional standing. Check the documents required for your application.

Visa and professional approval are different

The visa permits medical practice; professional approval recognises a particular qualification. The exact route also depends on the competent Community and the degree. MEDS LINK issues neither visa nor approval.

Is GP approval required?

Approval as a GP is separate from the basic medical degree and matters in particular for practising within the compulsory health insurance reimbursement system.
