Practise medicine in Switzerland: MEBEKO and MedReg
For a foreign medical degree, the applicable procedure with the Medical Professions Commission (MEBEKO) must be identified. Every doctor practising in Switzerland must appear in MedReg. Practising under one's own professional responsibility additionally depends on authorization from the competent canton. Nationality, where the degree was awarded and the type of activity affect the route.

Steps to check
- 01
Classify the degree and postgraduate title
Check whether the degree and any specialist qualification were awarded in the EU/EFTA or a third country. MEBEKO routes differ; an entry in the register does not always mean the degree has been recognised.
- 02
Follow the MEBEKO and MedReg route
Apply for the appropriate recognition or registration, then confirm the MedReg entry before practising. Employers must also check the register.
- 03
Check the language of practice
Necessary language skills must be demonstrated. The canton may verify the language required for the intended role.
- 04
Contact the competent canton
For work under one's own professional responsibility, check the cantonal authorization and the conditions attached to the role and location.
Recognition, registration and authorization differ
MEBEKO deals with qualifications; MedReg records professionals; cantons decide on authorization to practise under one's own responsibility. A job offer does not establish that these steps are complete.
Frequently asked questions
Is a MedReg entry enough for independent practice?
No. Practice under one's own professional responsibility requires recognised qualifications and authorization from the competent canton.
Do non-EU/EFTA degrees follow the same route?
No. The Federal Office of Public Health describes different procedures according to the degree and the applicant's situation; the applicable MEBEKO route must be identified.
